The Ministry of Minority Affairs launched its scheme, Seekho Aur Kamao in the year 2013. It is a skill development initiative aimed at reducing the rate of unemployment in India, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
The scheme aims to have a better approach to deal with the minorities in India. The minority communities often lack a good amount of representation in the country. The scheme ensures that minorities like Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, and Zoroastrians get equal access to resources in the Indian society. Linguistic minorities are included in the scheme as well.
One of the main aspects that makes this scheme so unique is the fact that it also aims to preserve the traditional skills that these minority groups have. The skills are preserved and honed so that they can be used effectively for employment. If these skills are not preserved, we risk them dying out, which would be a huge cultural loss. Preservation of these skills ensures higher chances of employment since the minorities are working in a field they are interested in.
What are the main objectives of the ministry of minority affairs schemes?
- To bring down the rate of unemployment amongst minorities
- To conserve and protect the modern and traditional skills these minorities have and linking them to the job market
- Improving the employability of school dropouts and existing workers by making sure they get placements.
- Generating better means of livelihood for the marginalized minorities and bringing them into the mainstream.
- To develop human resource for the country
- To enable minorities to avail opportunities in a growing job market
Depending on the educational qualifications and present job market trends, these young people are trained and their skills are upgraded so that they can earn a suitable livelihood via employment or make them suitable for self-employment. The scheme provides training for courses such as embroidery, leather goods, woodwork, weaving, among others.
Who is eligible for the seekho kamao scheme?
In order to be eligible for the scheme, an individual must be a minority between the ages of 14 to 45 years and the minimum qualification for the person should be that they have completed class V.
The scheme is implemented for the benefit of the minority communities that fall under the National Commission of Minorities Act of 1992, namely, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains. A certain section of the seats is reserved for women as well.
The training programs are approved by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). These training must also include basic IT training along with soft skills training.
The basic ideology behind this learn and earn scheme is that there are so many people in the rural and semi-urban areas, who are motivated and driven but lack the proper training and resources to earn a livelihood.
AISECT plays a very important role in this by helping them achieve their dreams and ensuring that they have employment opportunities after the training. The programs are made in such a way that they ensure the individual gets employed right after completion of their training.
The program ensures that more than 75% of the enrolled individuals go on to find a job later on in life. AISECT also ensures that the individuals remain motivated till they get a job. Over 20,000 people have received training from AISECT so far and this number is increasing as the years go.
